For years already, the theme of hands play and important and central role in Ilana Lewitans work. Especially important for her are the forgiving gestures of hands. Her impressive and clear imagery allows the spectator an open path to freely associate the images in terms of their own emotions and fantasy.
Caroline Klapp, Art Historian
Ilana Lewitan achieves a synthesis between photographical image and painterly gesture. It is the family photograph that underlies the work, although subjugated by her painting. Cropping and layering she strives to meld together photographical depiction and painterly expression. Beyond, the process also fuses past, present and future, real trauma and visionary utopia.
